Portal 2011 launch press release

April 17, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portal Magazine launch goes on despite postponement due to VIU strike

The 2011 Portal team is proud to present the official launch of this year’s edition of Portal on Thursday, April 21, 7-9 p.m. in the Royal Arbutus Room at Vancouver Island University. The annual literary magazine features new literary  and visual work from VIU students and this year it has a new layout and design that enhances and complements the works inside. In addition, Portal 2011 costs $2 less than years past – just $7.

The recent strike action was an unexpected twist for the Portal team that raised a few questions about the fate of the magazine, including if the launch would happen. But through it all the students stayed positive and the strike ended just in time for the launch to be rescheduled for three weeks after the original planned date.

This edition of Portal features an interview with Canadian poet Don McKay, the 2010 Ralph and Betty Gustafson Chair of Poetry. He delivered two inspiring poetry readings at the University in October 2010. It will also feature the winner of the postcard prose contest.

To celebrate the official unveiling, the Portal team has put together a catered evening of readings, music, and other entertainment, including a special guest author. Awards from the Creative Writing department will also be presented and there are door prizes to be won by those who purchase a copy of the magazine.

Since 1991, Portal has been put together by a dedicated class of VIU Creative Writing students who have a hand in all aspects of creating the magazine – selecting the writing and art pieces, making design decisions, working one-on-one with contributors on an editing basis, selling ads, and distributing the magazine. The class combines the process of learning how to put together a literary magazine while producing a high quality publication that showcases creative work by VIU students.

This special evening is open to the public. Advance copies can be purchased on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 19-20, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in building 345, VIU, Nanaimo campus.

Portal 2011 Pre-Sale Press Release

March 5, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portal Magazine Pre-Sale next week

The 2011 edition of Portal Magazine is almost here. Copies of the annual literary magazine out of VIU will be available for pre-order from Tuesday, Mar. 8 to Thursday, Mar. 10 in VIU’s Upper Cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The magazine, which features the best new literary and visual work from VIU students, has a new layout and design this year that enhances and complements the works inside. A table will be set up inside the cafeteria where copies will be available for cash sales. The magazine costs $7 – $2 less than previous years.

Portal won’t actually launch until the end of the semester, which is a busy time for the campus community. The pre-sale is a great way to ensure you get your copy of Portal when it is released in April without having to remember to buy one as you prepare for final exams and papers,” says Portal’s publicist, Rachelle Stein-Wotten.
